The BU/MIT Student Innovations Law Clinic (SILC) is a free and confidential legal service for students at MIT and BU who seek legal assistance related to their research, advocacy, and creative projects. 

The clinic is staffed by BU Law students under law faculty supervision in three different practice groups: Intellectual Property & Media; Privacy, Security & Health; and Venture & Finance. 

Over the course of the year, SILC provides counseling and representation to clients on a wide variety of legal issues, including intellectual property, information privacy, corporate law, cybersecurity, finance and business regulation, and media law.

SILC is the newest chapter in BU Law’s partnership with MIT, which began in 2015 with the creation of the BU/MIT Entrepreneurship, Intellectual Property & Cyberlaw Program, home to the Technology Law Clinic and the Startup Law Clinic. TEX-E stands for Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy. It’s a first-of-a-kind collaboration between Greentown Labs, MIT’s Martin Trust Center, and five Texas universities: Texas A&M, UT-Austin, University of Houston, Rice University, and Prairie View A&M University.

The objective is to create a powerful, student-driven entrepreneurship ecosystem in the Houston region and Texas broadly, focused on energy innovation and implementing lessons learned from building a successful ecosystem in Boston. This effort will aim to train and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs to lead the energy transition and to share in the massive economic opportunity it entails, while also addressing the existential threat of climate change.

Student Fellows
These individuals will serve as the student liaisons between their respective universities, as well as with MIT and Greentown Labs. They will help to identify and connect with the relevant groups at their university, while also participating in and learning from programs and activities at other universities.

Qualified candidates will have a passion for energy innovation and an in-depth knowledge of the energy innovation landscape within their university, as well as broader trends in energy transition and climate tech. Preferred candidates will have existing leadership roles (such as within a student club) at their individual universities.

Eligibility
Fellows must be:
a graduate or undergraduate student
currently enrolled at Texas A&M, UT-Austin, University of Houston, Rice University, Prairie View A&M, or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
who are graduating no earlier than 2025.

Requirements
All fellows will be expected to attend a kick-off meeting to be held at Greentown Labs Houston.
Fellows will participate in a coordination call every other week with staff from Greentown Labs and the Martin Trust Center, as well as other fellows.
Fellows will meet with student groups, staff, and faculty across their university and create a map of relevant stakeholders.
Fellows will organize at least one event at their university that is focused on entrepreneurship and the energy transition.
Fellows will work collaboratively with one another to design and organize these events, and will have the capacity to promote events and opportunities from other universities and ecosystem partners.

MIT students understand the equation t=0 means “the time is now,” as a new cycle of entrepreneurial activities kicks off. Tech2Market - Spring 2025

Tech2Market is a 6-credit course that provides graduate students with an immersive experience into early-stage entrepreneurship in the life sciences. If accepted, you will drive technology commercialization for life sciences technology coming out of MIT.

The course is focused on deep-tech ventures, and will combine a semester-long project alongside instruction in market identification, and commercialization strategies.

Class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-4 at the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship.

Please note that the exact project scope of work will be tailored to the skillset of the student team and needs of the venture before the start of the course. MIT has received an award from the NSF to provide I-Corps training to participants across New England. This program provides researchers with the tools and a seed micro-grant of up to $1,500 to explore potential applications for a technology and understand who would be a customer and why. Completing the MIT I-Corps program may qualify for participation in an immersive national NSF advanced customer discovery program and receive a $50K grant to support that exploration.

MIT Hacking Medicine is a group founded at MIT in 2011, comprising of MIT students and community members, aimed at energizing the healthcare community and accelerating medical innovation. We accomplish this by carrying out health hackathons, design thinking workshops, and networking gatherings to teach healthcare entrepreneurship. The group has organized to date more than 175 events across 29 countries and 5 continents. Over 50 companies have been created, raising over $240M in venture funding.

The MIT EnergyHack brings opportunities for learning, problem solving, and networking to the forefront as teams develop rapid, innovative solutions to the problems in energy that our society faces today.

With challenges written for a myriad of fields within the energy industry, and with our participants specializing across so many different disciplines, there is great opportunity for students and sponsors alike to apply their skills and learn something new.

In brief, participants will be presented with challenges from companies in the energy industry and break out into teams. SUD Ventures is an intense, hybrid program at MIT with a mission to spark scalable ventures that address substance-use disorders across prevention, long-term recovery, and data-driven policy. From October through December, you will complete short, pre-recorded modules and ~10 live online sessions, then spend January 19–23 at MIT for a five-day Bootcamp. 

You’ll build and vet a venture in coached teams, pitch to investors and NIDA, and leave with MIT’s innovation toolkit, a strong industry support network, and a certificate of completion. Tuition cost is $1080. 15 full NIDA-funded fellowships covering tuition, travel, and lodging will be awarded to SUD researchers. Who should apply? Researchers, engineers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, policy specialists, and graduate students who bring technical, clinical, or business insight into substance-use disorders and want to turn that expertise into a scalable venture.

Hard-tech companies face significant hurdles to success, especially in their early stages. For example, these startups typically spend their first few years and first few million dollars just to create the facilities they need to develop their technology.

The premise of START.nano is that early access to MIT.nano’s state-of-the-art laboratories can minimize the cost of launching a nascent idea, helping increase the survival rate of promising companies and potentially shortening the time it takes for their innovations to reach the market.

For 2021, the primary benefit for the START.nano participants will be discounted access to MIT.nano’s cleanrooms, characterization tools, and other laboratories. MIT.nano’s staff will use this pilot year to explore with the companies what programmatic support START.nano can incorporate to boost the success of hard-tech ventures.

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Bridge Loans through the ETF are for Massachusetts-based recipients of federal SBIR grants, which are federal grants that fund research and development projects at small businesses to help them explore their technological potential. SBIR grant awardees typically wait three to nine months for their grant funds; the SBIR Bridge Loans bridge the time between the SBIR award and the time the grant is funded, increasing the value of the SBIR grants by putting the money to work faster.

The venture capital model doesn’t work―at least not for 99% of startups and small businesses. In this 99% are a lot of companies with incredible potential: businesses headed by female founders and those from diverse racial backgrounds, organizations headquartered outside of venture capital hubs, and purpose-driven enterprises that are creating social and environmental impact alongside financial success.

Counter to what the press-savvy venture capital world would have you believe, there are a lot of funding options out there for startups and small businesses. Adventure Finance is designed to help you understand some of these options, and walk you through real examples of how other founders and funders have put them to use. 

In simple, approachable language, the book breaks down the different types of funding options available from revenue-based financing to recoverable grants to redeemable equity to distributed ownership and more. Y Combinator created a new model for funding early stage startups.
Twice a year we invest a small amount of money ($125k) in a large number of startups.

We work intensively with the companies for three months, to get them into the best possible shape and refine their pitch to investors. Each cycle culminates in Demo Day, when the startups present their companies to a carefully selected, invite-only audience.

But YC doesn’t end on Demo Day. We and the YC alumni network continue to help founders for the life of their company, and beyond.
